Steam Whistle Brewery

Steam Whistle - An Icon of the 50's Era

Our Brewery is named Steam Whistle, drawing from the inspirational sounds of steam rushing from factory whistles, signalling the end of a fulfilling workday and a time for personal reward. Steam-powered whistles were icons of the 1950's, a golden era of progress and prosperity, when things were built to last and people enjoyed the simple things in life. It was a time when the marketing of goods relied on a relationship of trust between manufacturers who produced quality goods and consumers who eagerly rewarded genuine results. Steam Whistle was founded on these forgotten principles.

To you, we offer the fruits of our labour. Let Steam Whistle be the reward at the end of your day!

Steam Whistle's Founding Story

The Steam Whistle story begins in the spring of 1998 when three friends were on a canoe trip in the Ontario heartland. Greg Taylor, Cam Heaps and Greg Cromwell had all been colleagues at one of Canada's premier microbreweries producing quality beer in the late 1980's and 90's - before it was bought out by a national brewer and closed down. As they sat around the campfire, the self-named "Three Fired Guys" dreamed of running their own brewery one day.

They wanted to make a Pilsner that would compete with the best in the world. They wrote a plan and quickly attracted investors with their vision and passion.

The Historic John St. Roundhouse

We chose the historic John St. Roundhouse, just south of the CN Tower, to house our world class brewery. The Roundhouse had functioned as a Canadian Pacific Rail steam locomotive repair facility when built in 1929 servicing steam locomotives that helped pioneer this nation. The "John St. Polish" was a term for the renowned gleam of the mighty engines that rolled out from here. There's a taste of Canadian history in every bottle we fill - a reflection of the hard work and pride within.

We hope you will join the thousands of visitors to our brewery each year, who come for a tour or to attend one of the many on-site events A visit provides the chance to see first-hand how we brew our Pilsner and to meet some of the folks behind our brand.

"Our focus is on making one beer - a Premium Pilsner that Canadians can be proud of."

We believe that world-class results require focus and dedication, so we developed a distinctive recipe for our single brand based on Europe's renowned brewing standards yet is brewed fresh locally at our independent, Canadian Brewery.

We use traditional brewing techniques and only four natural ingredients including spring water, malted barley, hops and yeast - all GMO-free. There is a fifth ingredient in every refreshing bottle, and that is the passion of our dedicated Brewmaster and staff.

Steam Whistle's Awards

Steam Whistle has received many awards over the years - some by established Beer Competitions and their esteemed judges, and others from consumers who appreciate a great brew and have cast their 'People's Choice' votes. We've been recognized for the outstanding beer that we make, for our business success, our environmental consciousness and sometimes just for the contribution that Steam Whistle Brewery makes to the community. We are flattered by all of the awards, and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for recognizing our efforts!

In April 2015, Steam Whistle Brewing was inducted into Canada's Best Managed Companies Platinum Clubfor winning this leading Canadian business award for seven years in a row. The awards presentation took place on November 13, 2014, paying tribute to businesses and organizations that demonstrate leadership in encouraging cycling by employees and/or customers. By doing so, these businesses are helping to promote the bicycle as a sustainable form of transportation. Steam Whistle was very honoured to have been awarded in the Best Overall Business category. The brewery's support of cycling includes: providing showers/towels/bikeracks for our staff; donating beers at the finish line of the Ride to Conquer Cancer (Alberta and Ontario) since 2010 for riders and supporters; installing a network of 17 Public Bike Repair Stations across ON/AB/BC with 12 more to be installed in 2015; building 100 custom Steam Whistle Cruiser bikes by Norco which were given away at events; sponsorship of dozens of MTB, downhill, and road racing teams and events; support of cycling advocacy groups. We love cycling!

In September 2014, Steam Whistle was chosen by the readers of Vancouver’s Georgia Straight magazine as the Best Beer Brewed Outside BC in their annual readers’ poll for the "Best of Vancouver" issue. We are flattered to have received this for the third time, especially knowing how many fantastic craft breweries there are in Canada and how well educated the BC drinkers are (first brewpub and craft brewery in Canada opened in BC launching Canada's craft beer movement). Thanks Vancouver!

In April 2014, Cam & Greg were honoured for the seventh year in a row as one of CANADA’S BEST MANAGED COMPANIES.
